Baby & Me Yoga
Various
This five-week program is designed for mothers and their babies, approximately six weeks to 1 years old, is both challenging and relaxing. Topics covered include postpartum conditions such as back strain, weak abdominal wall and pelvic floor, tight shoulders, sleeplessness and stress. It helps women regain strength, as well as adapt and grow in their new role as mother. It is an opportunity to nourish that profound bond with baby. A sense of community in the class allows students to discuss any concerns or share information and ideas on parenting in a nurturing environment. A certified yoga instructor facilitates these classes. This hour program will be held at the Destination Maternity’s Learning Studio, located at 35 Plaza on Route 4 west, Paramus on Mondays, and the Dorothy B. Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road, Paramus on Wednesdays. The fee is $85 for a five-week series.

Breastfeeding Program

This informative course explores the advantages and benefits of breastfeeding. There will also be discussions regarding techniques that work, positions that are comfortable, common problems, pumping and storage of breast milk and the correct use of the breast pumping equipment.  In addition, Medela breastfeeding products will be available for rental or purchase. This class should be taken during the eighth month of pregnancy. The course will be held on September 1, 2 and 16. The fee is $50.

Newborn Care Program

This course details all the basics of newborn care for expectant parents and excited grandparents.  Bathing, bath products, diapering, cord care, temperature-taking, dressing, sleep patterns, and pediatrician intervention are some of the topics covered.  Childcare providers are welcome to register. This three-hour, one-session class will be held on Sept. 2, 16 and 23. The fee is $50 per couple. Classes should be taken before the birth of the child.

Grandparents' Class

This three-hour class will provide information on the latest ideas in childbirth practices and child development. It will encourage a better understanding between parents and grandparents concerning decisions and suggestions that are involved in childcare. Topics to be covered will include newborn care, infant feeding, ways to soothe a crying baby, infant safety, childproofing a home, toys for various ages, and other concerns for new grandparents. Registration is necessary. Classes should be taken toward the end of the pregnancy. The fee is $45.

Annual Senior Health Fair
The Allendale Community for Mature Living, 85 Harreton Road, Allendale
The event, which will feature a "Red, White & Blue" theme in honor of Patriot Day, is specially designed to address potential medical risks and undiagnosed medical conditions that may otherwise remain undetected in older adults. The health fair features a wide range of free wellness and health education sessions and information. Attendees will receive free gifts and an opportunity to win door prizes. In addition, diagnostic evaluations and screenings also will be performed by local medical professionals and physicians. While pre-registration for the Annual Health Fair is not required, appointments are necessary for the Life Line Screening and can be made by calling (800) 636-0418.

CPR Class
Bergen Regional Medical Center, 230 E. Ridgewood Ave., Paramus
Almost 80 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur at home and are witnessed by a family member. However, only 6.4 percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims survive because the vast majority of those witnessing the arrest are people who do not know how to perform CPR. Bergen Regional is offering the Family & Friends CPR Anytime Personal Learning Program, developed by the American Heart Association in collaboration with Laerdal, free of charge to the community. This specially created program, including free personal CPR kits, will take place in the Auditorium of Building Six at Bergen Regional Medical Center. This kit does not provide certification in CPR but does provide essential education on life saving CPR training. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited for this free program. Due to space and kit availability, those who do not pre-register will not be able to participate.

Hypnosis to Stop Smoking Program
This program is designed to help those with a sincere desire to quit smoking. The first portion of the program is dedicated to understanding the reasons why you smoke, as well as identifying why you want to stop. The second portion will address the self-defeating obstacles that often undermine your desire to quit smoking by using hypnotic suggestions and behavior modification techniques to recognize them. Participants in the program receive a 30-day reinforcement audiotape and a series of behavior modification cards to be used daily as positive reinforcement. The program fee is $75, which includes the cost of materials and revisits to future seminars for one year for reinforcement. The program will be conducted by Barbara Van Duyne, a certified professional from Alternative Health Systems, Wayne. Van Duyne has more that five years experience in the field of habit control. She has conducted wellness programs on a monthly basis in more than 20 hospitals throughout New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. She is a member of the International Association of Counselors and Therapist and the National Guild of Hypnotics.

Diabetes Self-Management Program
Kraft Center, 15 Essex Road, Paramus
Program topics include learning to live with and manage diabetes, disease process, monitoring and use of blood glucose results, nutritional management, medication review, changing behavior, goal setting, complications, foot care, exercise and community resources. The program, held monthly, is a four-week course with two-hour meetings once a week. The next course dates are Sept. 15, 22, and 29, and Oct. 6. Prior to participating, registrants must complete a one-hour individual assessment with a diabetes educator. Many insurance companies, including Medicare, will cover this program as a benefit to their subscribers. The patient’s out-of-pocket cost will depend on the policy coverage and any limitations.

The Ultimate Birthing Experience Refresher/VBAC

This course offers a thorough review of labor and delivery and should be taken during your seventh month of pregnancy. The course provides information and preparation for couples who have previously delivered by Cesarean section. Topics include tips for Lamaze techniques of breathing, relaxation, and labor skills will be reviewed. Classes should be completed four-to-six weeks before the baby’s due date. The fee for this three-hour course is $50.

"Holistic Medicine and Your Health"

Heart disease is the number one health threat women face today.  However, studies show that leading a healthy lifestyle can help women lower heart disease risk. To help educate women about the dangers of heart disease and how to live a heart healthy lifestyle, the Women’s Cardiac Health Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center will offer free lectures every fourth Thursday of the month. Sibling Preparation Class

This class, for children ages 3-7, is for big brothers and big sisters. Class activities are age specific and encourage positive feelings about their place in the family and the new baby. Included is a tour of the Valley Hospital’s Family Wellness Care Center. Registration is necessary. Classes should be taken about four weeks before mother’s due date. The fee is $40 (one child) and $20 each additional child.
